NEW YORK FOOD HANDLER REQUIREMENTS
Chautauqua County Specific Requirements:
- County requires that all food workers have food safety training before handling food served to the public.
- Food Workers are required to take a Food Safety Certification Course provided by the local health office. This is a three-hour training is REQUIRED of Food Service Establishments in Chautauqua County
- Check with local health department to determine where to obtain approved food worker training, test, and card.
- Food service workers are required to obtain a food handler card within 30 days of beginning work.
- Must be renewed every 5 years.
Monroe, Livingston & Schenectady County Specific Requirements:
- County requires that all food workers have food safety training before handling food served to the public.
- Food workers who take a food safety training class and pass an approved exam on food safety basics are issued a ANAB-Accredited Food Handler Certificate.
- Classroom & on-line courses are acceptable.
- Check with local health department to determine where to obtain approved food worker training, test, and card.
- Food service workers are required to obtain a food handler card within 30 days of beginning work.
- Must be renewed every 3 years.
Tioga County Specific Requirements:
- County requires that all food workers have food safety training before handling food served to the public.
- Food workers who take a food safety training class and pass a Tioga County Health Department approved exam on food safety basics are issued a ANAB-Accredited Food Handler Certificate.
- Check with local health department to determine where to obtain approved food worker training, test, and card.
- Food service workers are required to obtain a food handler card within 30 days of beginning work.
Broome County Specific Requirements:
- County requires that all food workers have food safety training before handling food served to the public.
- Food workers who take a food safety training class and pass an approved exam on food safety basics are issued a ANAB-Accredited Food Handler Certificate.
- Check with local health department to determine where to obtain approved food worker training, test, and card.
- Food service workers are required to obtain a food handler card within 30 days of beginning work.
New York City Specific Requirements:
- The NYC Health Code requires that there be at least one supervisor certified in food protection on site any time a food service establishment and non-retail food processing establishment is operating.
- To receive a certification, you must first complete the free Online Food Protection Course provided through the city. The online course is offered in English, Spanish and Chinese. The course is self-paced and consists of 15 lessons. You must complete each lesson and pass a quiz before moving on to the next lesson. The study guide and exam are offered in English and 36 other languages.
- Once you finish the course, you must pay $24.60 (including fees) to take the final exam to receive your certification. You will be prompted to schedule an exam appointment once you successfully complete the course. You must pay with a credit card.
- You must take the final exam in person at:
- NYC Health Academy, Riverside Health Center, 160 West 100th Street, Third Floor, Manhattan
- The Food Handler Solutions Program is currently NOT approved in NYC. This program is only intended to be used for personal development and preparation for the NYC provided training.
All other New York Counties:
- Obtaining a valid food handler card is voluntary for all other counties in New York.
