NEW JERSEY FOOD HANDLER REQUIREMENTS

Paterson City & Wayne City / Passaic County – Somerset County / Hillsborough City Specific Requirements:

  • City & County requires that all food workers have food safety training before handling food served to the public.
  • Food workers who take a food safety training class and pass an approved exam on food safety basics are issued an ANAB-Accredited Food Handler Certificate.
  • Classroom & online courses are acceptable.
  • Check with the local health department to determine where to obtain approved food worker training, test, and card.
  • Foodservice workers are required to obtain a food handler card within 30 days of beginning work.

Bergen County Specific Requirements:

  • Bergen County requires that all food workers have food safety training before handling food served to the public.
  • Food workers who take a food safety training class and pass a Bergen County Health Department approved ANAB accredited certificate program on food safety basics are issued a ANAB-Accredited Food Handler Certificate.
  • Check with the local health department to determine where to obtain approved food worker training, test, and card.
  • Food service workers are required to obtain a food handler card within 30 days of beginning work.
  • Certificate must be renewed every 2 years.

City Specific Requirements:

  • Lyndhurst, Hillsborough, Rutherford, Englewood, Teaneck:
    • All food workers have food safety training before handling food served to the public.
    • Food handlers must complete local health department-approved food safety training and exam.
    • Check with the local health department to determine where to obtain approved food worker training, test, and card
  • Newark City
    • The City of Newark now requires a Food Handlers Permit for any public food distribution to the homeless.
    • Check with the local health department to determine where to obtain approved food worker training, test, and card
    • The certificate must be renewed every 3 years.

All other New Jersey Counties:

  • Obtaining a valid food handler card is voluntary for all other counties in New Jersey.
